Two people have died and five others are in critical condition after a
vehicle plowed into a crowd of people near a venue for the South by
Southwest festival in Austin, Texas early this morning, police said.
Austin Police confirmed the accident, stating that 21 people were transported to area hospitals.
Austin Police Lt. Brian Moon said the driver -- who has since been taken into custody -- crashed through temporary barricades.
"The driver continued to drive after crashing through the barricades and
hit numerous pedestrians before the vehicle stopped," Moon told ABC
News Radio.
The accident happened at Red River Street and East 10th Street, near
several clubs. Photos taken at the scene show victims laying in the
street, with emergency vehicles responding. The Austin-Travis County EMS
also responded to the accident, according to ABC affiliate KVUE.
